FC 27 Manual Defending Guide: Jockey, Switch and Tackle Without the AI
Defending in FC 27 feels different from any recent FC game, and the reason is official. In EA's Gameplay Deep Dive, the gameplay team explained that AI-controlled defenders have less influence in Competitive Gameplay and that the manually controlled defender has more power. In practice that means your AI teammates no longer step in and win the ball for you just because a dribbler runs close to them.
This guide explains exactly what changed, the controls you will use most, a repeatable routine for stopping a dribbler, how to defend crosses and through balls, and the custom tactic settings that make manual defending easier. The changes described here are taken from EA's own notes and listed in the sources at the bottom. The routines, priorities and tactic suggestions are FC Tactics recommendations built on those notes and on independent guides, not official EA advice.
One important scope note: EA says the AI defending changes apply to Competitive Gameplay, which is used in online modes such as Ultimate Team Rivals, Champions and online Seasons. Career Mode and other modes using Authentic Gameplay are tuned separately, so the AI may still help you more there.
What EA changed about defending in FC 27
EA's Gameplay Deep Dive lists several defensive changes that work together. Understanding them explains why the habits that worked in FC 26 now leave gaps.
First, AI defenders no longer make automatic tackles in Competitive Gameplay. They hold their positions and support the play, and they can still collect a loose ball or win it if a dribbler runs straight into them, but the decision to challenge is yours. Second, AI interception reach is reduced, while your controlled player reaches further. A defender you control in a passing lane is now far more likely to cut out a pass than the same defender left to the AI.
Third, manual defending got stronger: jockey movement is faster than in FC 26 and manually triggered standing tackles have more range. Fourth, Teammate Contain now pressures the ball carrier from slightly further away, so it slows an attack down rather than stealing the ball. Independent guides from G2A, How To Video Game and GAMES.GG, all checking against EA's notes, also report that Team Press no longer helps once the ball is in your defensive third.
Put together, the message is simple: the game rewards you for taking control early and making the decision yourself.
The controls you will use most
These are the long-standing default inputs for the classic control scheme. EA does not publish a separate FC 27 defending cheat sheet that we could find, so check your own Controller Settings screen if you have changed your layout, and see our controller settings guide for the options that affect switching.
- Jockey: hold L2 on PlayStation or LT on Xbox. This is your main defensive stance; it keeps your player facing the attacker and moving sideways.
- Contain: hold X on PlayStation or A on Xbox. Your player closes towards the ball carrier while staying on his feet.
- Teammate Contain: hold R1 or RB. A nearby AI teammate pressures the ball carrier, now from a little further away than last year.
- Standing tackle: press Circle or B. Use it when the ball is away from the attacker's feet, not when he has it tight.
- Slide tackle: press Square or X. A last resort; a miss usually takes your player out of the play.
- Switch player: press L1 or LB to change to the player nearest the ball, or flick the right stick towards the player you want.
The core loop: switch, protect, jockey, tackle
Most goals conceded in FC 27 come from one of two mistakes: switching too late, or tackling too early. A simple four-step loop fixes both, and it is worth practising until you do it without thinking.
Switch. Change to the defender who will face the danger before the pass arrives, not after. NealGuides puts this at the top of its FC 27 defending tips, and it matches EA's change to interception reach: a defender you control in the right lane is the most effective thing you have. If the ball is moving towards your right-back's zone, be on your right-back while the ball is still travelling.
Protect. Decide what you are protecting first: the shooting lane, the pass behind you or the run into the box. Stand on that line. You do not have to win the ball straight away; you have to stop the attacker getting what he wants.
Jockey. Hold the jockey button and move with the attacker, keeping a small gap. The faster FC 27 jockey makes it easier to stay in front, but holding sprint at the same time cancels much of that control, so only sprint to recover position, then let go and jockey again.
Tackle. Press standing tackle when the attacker pushes the ball away from his body, takes a heavy touch or turns his back. If he still has the ball glued to his foot, wait. A missed tackle is worse than no tackle at all, because it leaves your defender facing the wrong way.
Step by step: stopping a dribbler one-on-one
Use this routine in Squad Battles or a friendly until it is automatic, then trust it in Rivals and Champions.
- As the attacker receives the ball, switch to the closest defender between him and your goal.
- Position yourself goal-side and slightly towards the inside, so the attacker is pushed towards the touchline rather than into the middle.
- Hold jockey and match his movement without sprinting. Keep roughly one stride of distance.
- Watch for the heavy touch, the stop-and-turn or the moment he looks to pass. That is your window.
- Press standing tackle once, cleanly. Do not mash the button; repeated presses can make your player lunge.
- If he beats you, sprint only to get back goal-side, then return to jockey. Do not dive in with a slide tackle from behind.
Defending through balls and passes in behind
Through balls are the easiest way to score against players who are still defending the FC 26 way. Because AI interception reach is shorter, you can no longer rely on your centre-back cutting out a pass he is not controlled by.
The fix is to read the pass. When the opponent's midfielder turns to face your goal with space in front of him, switch to the centre-back closest to the most dangerous runner before the pass is played. Take a step back if the striker is on your shoulder. Once the pass is played, run on the line between the ball and the goal rather than chasing the attacker directly; you want to arrive in front of him, not behind him.
Your defensive line height in your custom tactic matters here too. A high line squeezes space in midfield but leaves room behind; a lower line gives you a cushion against pace. If you keep losing to balls over the top, drop the line a few steps before you change anything else.
Using your midfielders without leaving gaps
Many players spent FC 26 controlling a defensive midfielder and letting the AI centre-backs handle the striker. You can still defend with your midfielder in FC 27, and NealGuides notes this remains useful higher up the pitch, but once the ball gets past your midfield line you need to switch to your back line and take control there.
A good habit is to treat the edge of your defensive third as a trigger. While the ball is in midfield, control the midfielder nearest to it and block passing lanes. When the ball crosses into your third, switch to the defender facing the danger. Team Press and the AI will not close that space for you any more, so this switch matters more than it used to.
Teammate Contain is still useful for buying time while you get into position, but because it now holds off a little further, think of it as a way to slow an attack and force a sideways pass rather than a way to win the ball.
Defending crosses and corners
EA also reworked crossing and corners for FC 27, with more attacking variety from wide areas and set pieces. That makes defending the box more about positioning than about last-second button presses.
When a cross is coming, switch to the defender nearest the most dangerous attacker, usually the striker attacking the near post or the runner arriving at the penalty spot. Get goal-side of him and press the header button only when the ball arrives. Standing still in the right place usually beats running at the ball and jumping early.
On corners, pick one attacker you will mark yourself and stay with him. Let the AI handle the rest of the box, but stay disciplined; chasing the ball around the area leaves your man free at the back post.
Custom tactic settings that support manual defending
These are FC Tactics suggestions rather than EA defaults. Test them in a low-stakes match and adjust to your squad. You can build them on top of any formation in our custom tactics guide.
- Defensive approach: start with a balanced or deep line if your centre-backs lack pace. A slightly deeper line gives you more time to switch and jockey.
- Two holding players: formations like 4-2-3-1 and 4-2-2-2 keep two midfielders in front of the back four, which gives you a second layer to switch to before the ball reaches your defenders.
- Full-back roles: if you concede down the flanks, set at least one full-back to a more defensive role so you are not defending two-against-one when he is caught upfield.
- Avoid over-pressing: aggressive pressing high up the pitch is less valuable when Team Press cannot help in your own third, and it can drag players out of shape when the press is beaten.
- Keep one protect tactic: save a version of your base tactic with a lower line and more defensive roles, in the same formation, to switch to when you are protecting a lead.
Common mistakes that get punished in FC 27
Waiting for the AI. The single biggest mistake is expecting a nearby AI defender to tackle. In Competitive Gameplay it will not, so take control.
Sprinting while jockeying. Holding sprint makes your defender easier to beat with a simple change of direction. Use sprint to recover, not to defend.
Diving in. Pressing tackle while the attacker has close control usually ends with him going past you. Wait for the touch.
Switching after the pass. By the time the ball arrives, the defender you switch to is often already beaten. Switch while the ball is travelling, or before it is played.
Slide tackles from behind. They are slow to recover from and risk a foul. Save them for when the ball is loose and you are side-on.
A short practice plan
Defending improves fastest with focused repetition. Spend one session on each of these, in Squad Battles or a friendly against the AI on a difficulty that pushes you.
Session one: switching only. Do not worry about winning the ball; just try to be on the right defender before every pass into your half. Session two: jockey and wait. Try to stay in front of every dribbler for three seconds before tackling. Session three: one tackle rule. Allow yourself a single tackle press per attack and see how many you win cleanly. Session four: put it all together in a full match and watch the replay of each goal you concede to see which step went wrong.
If you also struggle on the ball, our skill moves guide shows the moves attackers will use against you, which helps you recognise the moment to tackle.
Frequently asked questions
Are auto-tackles gone in FC 27?
In Competitive Gameplay, yes. EA says AI defenders no longer attempt tackles automatically; they hold position and can still win a loose ball. Career Mode uses Authentic Gameplay, which is tuned separately.
What is the best way to defend in FC 27?
Switch early to the defender facing the danger, protect the shooting or passing lane, jockey without sprinting, and only tackle when the attacker loses close control. This is our recommended routine, based on EA's changes.
Is Teammate Contain still useful in FC 27?
Yes, but it pressures from slightly further away than in FC 26, so use it to slow an attack and force a pass rather than to win the ball.
Does Team Press work in FC 27?
Independent guides checking EA's notes report that Team Press no longer helps once the ball is in your defensive third. It can still be used higher up the pitch.
How do I jockey in FC 27?
On the classic layout, hold L2 on PlayStation or LT on Xbox. Check your controller settings if you have changed your button layout.
Which formation is best for defending in FC 27?
Shapes with two holding midfielders, such as 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2, give you a second line in front of your defence. This is our recommendation, not an EA statement.
