4-3-1-2 Custom Tactics Guide for EA Sports FC 27
The 4-3-1-2 is one of the most popular two-striker formations in FC 27. When we checked FUT.GG's tactic tracker on 15 October 2026, its most-used 4-3-1-2 setup appeared in around 18% of the squads it tracks, second only to the 4-2-1-3. The shape packs the centre of the pitch: three central midfielders, a number ten and two strikers. It is ideal if your best players are central midfielders and forwards rather than wingers, and it makes short passing through the middle feel natural.
This FC Tactics guide covers how the shape works, which roles suit each position, the team tactics we suggest starting from, how to attack and defend, and how to fix its weaknesses. Further down the page are credited tactic codes copied exactly from FUT.GG and Mark11 Coaching, each linked to its source with the date we checked it. We did not create or test those codes, and our own recommendations are opinions, not official EA advice. Menu labels and role names can change between title updates, so check the options in your own game.
EA's FC 27 gameplay notes describe a stronger focus on manual defending, no AI auto-tackling on Competitive presets, and fully manual-aim through passes and dinked passes. For a narrow two-striker shape, that means your combinations through the middle depend on your own passing accuracy, and stopping wide attacks depends on your own positioning more than ever.

All FC 27 tactic codes →Shape overview
The 4-3-1-2 lines up as a goalkeeper, a back four, three central midfielders, one attacking midfielder and two strikers. There are no wide midfielders or wingers at all. The width comes from the full-backs and from the outside central midfielders shuffling across.
The strength is numbers in the middle. With three central midfielders and a ten, you usually have four players between the lines and your defence, which makes it hard for an opponent to press you and easy to keep the ball with short passes. The two strikers give the ten constant targets and allow one to drop short while the other runs in behind.
The weakness is just as clear. The flanks are empty unless your full-backs push on, and the space behind an attacking full-back is the first place opponents will aim. This formation rewards discipline: decide which full-back attacks and keep the other one at home.
Recommended roles by position
Use these as starting points for FC 27's role system and adjust them to your squad.
- Goalkeeper: a standard goalkeeper is the safe choice. A sweeper-style keeper only makes sense if you play a high line.
- Centre-backs: one who stays back and one who can step out. Pace helps because opponents will try to go round your narrow shape and into the channels.
- Full-backs: one attacking full-back for width on your stronger side and one conservative full-back. Both pushing on leaves three defenders against wingers.
- Central midfielders: the middle player should be a holding role that protects the defence. The two outside midfielders can be box-to-box or more defensive, and they will need to cover the flanks when you lose the ball.
- Attacking midfielder: your most creative player. A playmaker role links the midfield to the strikers; a more attacking role turns the shape into a front three.
- Strikers: pair a runner who attacks the space behind with a striker who drops in or holds the ball up. Two of the same type makes the shape predictable.
Team tactics to start from
Start from these principles, or use a credited code below as a base, then change one thing at a time. Mark11 Coaching's 4-3-1-2 setup uses a short-passing build-up, which suits this shape well.
- Build-up: short passing or balanced. The shape is built for quick combinations in the middle.
- Defensive approach: balanced. A very high line leaves too much space wide; a very deep line disconnects your strikers.
- Width: keep attacking width fairly wide so the full-back has room, and defensive width narrow so the middle stays compact.
- Players in the box: medium to high. Two strikers and a ten are already near goal.
- Set pieces: keep the holding midfielder back so you are not caught on a counter-attack.
How to attack with the 4-3-1-2
The core pattern is a triangle between the ten and the two strikers. Play into the ten, then into the nearer striker, and look for the return pass or the second striker's run. Short one-twos in front of the box are the formation's best weapon, because a narrow defence has to commit someone to each pass.
Use the outside central midfielders as late runners. When the strikers pull the centre-backs apart, a midfielder arriving into the gap is very hard to track. If the defence stays narrow, switch the ball to your attacking full-back early and attack the space before the defence can shift.
With manual-aim through passes in FC 27, aim into the space ahead of your striker, not at him. If the pass is not on, go back to the holding midfielder and restart. The shape keeps the ball well, so there is no need to force the final pass.
Vary the strikers' movement. One should regularly drop towards the ten to receive, while the other runs beyond the last defender. That staggered movement is what stops the centre-backs simply stepping up together.
How to defend with the 4-3-1-2
Out of possession, the three central midfielders should shuffle across as a unit towards the ball. The outside midfielder on the ball side presses or covers the wide player, while the holding midfielder protects the centre.
With no AI auto-tackling on Competitive presets, jockey and position yourself between the attacker and goal. Do not pull your holding midfielder out with the second-player press; he is the player who keeps the middle closed.
Your biggest risk is a winger running at your full-back with no wide midfielder to help. Delay first, show the winger down the line rather than inside, and let your outside central midfielder recover to double up.
Weaknesses and how to fix them
- Empty flanks: if wide attacks keep hurting you, set both full-backs to stay back and ask the outside central midfielders to stay wider in defence.
- Predictable central play: when the middle is blocked, switch play to your attacking full-back early instead of forcing passes through traffic.
- Tired midfielders: the outside central midfielders cover a lot of ground. Substitute them around the hour mark.
- Strikers isolated: if the ten is marked out of the game, drop one striker deeper or switch to a 4-1-2-1-2 with two central midfielders who can carry the ball forward.
Game-state adjustments
When protecting a lead, set both full-backs to stay back, drop the line a little and move to a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 to add wide midfielders. That keeps your back four and two of your central players in the same places.
When chasing a goal, push both full-backs on, change the ten to a more attacking role, and consider a 4-2-2-2 so you have four attackers near the box.
Who the 4-3-1-2 suits
This shape suits squads with strong central midfielders, a creative number ten and two good strikers, but no standout wingers. It also suits players who prefer to keep the ball and build attacks through short passes. If your best players are pacey wingers, the 4-2-1-3 or 4-3-3 will make better use of them.
If you like the 4-3-1-2 but find it too open, the 4-1-2-1-2 narrow is a close cousin with a different midfield balance. If you want even more attackers, try the 4-2-2-2.
How to use the credited codes on this page
The codes on this page come from FUT.GG's most-used 4-3-1-2 setup and from Mark11 Coaching's own short-passing 4-3-1-2 setup. They are copied exactly and were last checked on 15 October 2026. Open Squad, go to Custom Tactics, choose the option to use a tactic code and paste it in. Codes are case sensitive.
Use the code as a starting point, not a finished answer. Play a few friendlies, see where you concede and where chances come from, and change one setting at a time. If a code stops working, check the source link; sites can update or remove them.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 4-3-1-2 good in FC 27?
It is one of the most used formations on FUT.GG's tracker, with around 18% of tracked squads using its top setup as of 15 October 2026. It works best for squads with strong central midfielders and two strikers.
What is the difference between the 4-3-1-2 and the 4-1-2-1-2?
The 4-3-1-2 uses three central midfielders side by side. The 4-1-2-1-2 uses one holding midfielder with two central midfielders ahead of him, which gives a diamond shape and slightly different cover.
Do you have a 4-3-1-2 tactic code?
Yes. This page shows credited codes copied from FUT.GG and Mark11 Coaching, linked to each source with the date we checked them. FC Tactics did not create or test them.
How do I defend wide areas in the 4-3-1-2?
Keep one full-back conservative, ask the outside central midfielders to shuffle across, and jockey wingers down the line while help arrives.
Which striker pairing works best?
One runner who attacks the space behind and one who drops in or holds the ball up. Different movements stop the centre-backs stepping up together.
