Fake Shot Skill Move Guide - EA Sports FC 27
The Fake Shot is the simplest way to beat a defender in EA Sports FC 27, and arguably the most useful. It needs only one skill move star, so every player in your squad can do it, from centre backs to strikers. Your player shapes to shoot or cross, the defender reacts, and you cut the ball away in another direction. Because defenders and goalkeepers react to a shooting motion, the Fake Shot can create space where flashier moves cannot.
This guide covers the PS5 and Xbox inputs, a step-by-step breakdown, the best situations to use it, the combinations that make it more dangerous, practice drills, common mistakes and how to defend it. The button presses come from published skill move lists and long-standing series controls rather than a dedicated EA confirmation for FC 27. Test the move in the Practice Arena before you depend on it in an online match.

On PS5, press Circle to start a shot or cross, then press X immediately while holding the left stick in the direction you want to go. On Xbox, press B then A while holding the left stick in your chosen direction. The first press starts the shooting animation and the second press cancels it into a touch. The direction of the left stick at the moment of the second press decides where the ball goes.
The Fake Shot can also be performed with the cross button followed by the pass button. Both versions do a similar job; the cross version looks more like a cross from wide areas and the shot version looks more like a strike at goal.
Step by step: how to do the Fake Shot
- Approach the defender or the edge of the box at a controlled pace.
- Choose the direction you want to cut towards and point the left stick there.
- Press Circle (PS5) or B (Xbox) to start the shooting motion.
- Press X (PS5) or A (Xbox) straight after, before the shot is struck.
- Keep the left stick held in your chosen direction as your player cuts the ball away.
- Shoot, pass or carry the ball into the space you have created.
When the Fake Shot works best
The Fake Shot is most effective in and around the penalty area. Defenders who believe a shot is coming often try to block it, and that blocking animation leaves them unable to recover when you cut away. It is especially good against sliding tackles, which commit the defender to the ground.
It is also very useful from wide positions. A fake cross on the wing can send a full-back the wrong way and give you room to cut inside onto your stronger foot or to the byline for a cutback. Because it needs no extra skill move stars, defenders and full-backs can use it too when they need to escape pressure.
When to avoid it
The Fake Shot is less effective when the defender is far away. A defender several yards away has time to adjust after the fake, so you lose time without gaining space. It is also less useful in midfield, where defenders are less likely to commit to blocking a shot.
Avoid overusing it. Experienced opponents stop reacting to fake shots once they have seen two or three in a match, and a predictable fake becomes a wasted touch. Mix it with real shots so the threat stays believable.
Fake Shot combos
The Fake Shot links well with almost every other move. A Fake Shot followed by a Roulette or a Berba Spin can take you past a defender who has already been frozen by the first fake. A double Fake Shot, performing the move twice in quick succession, can unsettle defenders who have learned to wait for the first fake.
A simple and very effective pattern is Fake Shot followed by a real shot on the other foot. If the defender blocks the space on your stronger foot, the cut opens the angle on the other side.
Practice drills
- In the Practice Arena, dribble towards the box and practise cutting left and right off the Fake Shot.
- Practise the fake cross version from wide areas, cutting inside and towards the byline.
- Combine the Fake Shot with a finish so you learn to recover your balance before shooting.
- Practise with different players, including a defender, to see how the animation changes with attributes.
Common mistakes
- Pressing the second button too late, so the shot is struck instead of faked.
- Forgetting to hold the left stick, so the ball stays in front of the defender.
- Using it too far from goal, where defenders do not react to the fake.
- Repeating it every attack so the opponent stops biting.
- Faking towards a covering defender you have not noticed.
How to defend against the Fake Shot
Do not dive in. The Fake Shot relies on the defender reacting to the shooting motion, so a defender who stays on their feet and keeps jockeying is hard to beat with it. Avoid sliding tackles in the penalty area unless you are certain a shot is coming.
Position matters more than reaction speed. If you stay goal side and block the attacker's stronger foot, a successful fake only moves them onto their weaker foot, which is still a win for the defender.
Which players suit the Fake Shot
Every player can perform the Fake Shot, which is its biggest advantage. Strikers and wingers get the most value, but full-backs and central midfielders can use it to escape pressure as well. Players with good agility and balance recover from the fake more quickly.
If your squad has players with only one or two skill move stars, the Fake Shot should be your main attacking move. Combine it with the knock-on and the stop-and-turn, which are also available to every player.
Why simple moves often beat flashy ones
The Fake Shot rarely looks impressive, but it is used by competitive players because it is quick, low risk and available to every player. Flashier moves take longer and need more skill move stars, and a long animation is easier to interrupt. In most matches, a well-timed fake does more for your chances than a perfectly executed five star trick.
Fake crosses on the wing
The fake cross is the same move performed with the cross button and the pass button. It is particularly effective when a full-back has shown you the outside and is trying to block the cross. One press starts the crossing motion, the second cancels it, and the left stick decides whether you cut inside or keep going towards the byline.
Cutting towards the byline after a fake cross often leads to a low cutback, one of the most reliable chances in the game. Cutting inside opens a shot on the stronger foot.
Using the Fake Shot in different modes
In online modes, opponents often hold the block or slide in the box, which makes the Fake Shot more effective. Against the AI in Career Mode, defenders react to shooting motions too, but they recover more consistently, so the fake works best very close to goal. In Clubs, the move is valuable for any position, because every player can perform it.
In all modes, the Fake Shot is best thought of as a way to change the angle for a shot or a pass. Once you have created the angle, use it straight away.
Faking the goalkeeper
The Fake Shot can also beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one. If the keeper rushes out and goes down to block, a fake followed by a cut to the side can leave an open net. This is risky if the keeper stays on their feet, so use it when you see them committing early. A finesse shot or a chip is often the safer option against a keeper who holds their position.
Building the Fake Shot into your game
Start by using the move once or twice per match in the penalty area, when a defender is close and you are facing goal. Once it becomes automatic, try the fake cross on the wing. Keep track of how often it creates a shot. If defenders stop reacting, switch to a real shot for a while to restore the threat, then return to the fake later in the match.
